Fair Indigo: ‘Green’ Earth-Friendly Fair Trade Products Made from Renewable, Sustainable Resources

Free Trade, in such parameters as NAFTA and CAFTA is synonymous with global destruction. Think this is hyperbole? Think I’m just a paranoid liberal? Consider this. Most of the first world speaks with a forked tongue. Or at least gives a mixed message. We talk ‘green’ and ‘global’ and ‘environmentally friendly’. Then we talk free trade, EEU, world market. We fear protectionism.

But free trade equals deforestation, laissez faire and world poverty. In order for the first world, aka us, to consume at the pace we do, there must be a third world to support our unprincipled consumerism. Our greed depends upon the blood, sweat and tears of the poor. Or as the great Mother Theresa said, ‘it is a crime that others must suffer and die so that you may live as you wish’. We can’t have what we want at no cost.

The only way to really live green, to help the hungry and suffering, is through fair trade policies. You’ve heard the old maxim; ‘Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.’? I’ll extend that idea. Pay a man fairly for his fish and the whole world eats.

I just discovered a website and fair trade manufacturer that I’m going to promote. Fair Indigo makes a complete line of mens’ womens’ and childrens’ clothing and accessories, handknit with completely sustainable and renewable resources. Many of the products are made from bamboo, which is one of the most sustainable plants on earth. The garments are handmade and durable. Being a natural fiber, bamboo is very breathable. How’s that for truly green living?

Second, the workers are paid a living wage, have reasonable working hours, a month’s paid vacation and five months maternity leave. Is that asking so much? Are these workers selfish? Of course not, but it is pretty uncommon in the third world.

Fair Indigo’s garments and accessories aren’t cheap. But that’s as it should be. If we have to reduce the amount of junk clothing and accessories, that reduces landfills, right? Question by fallenfire99: Will a red kitchen look gawdy next to a seafoam green living room?
I’m deciding on kitchen paint colors and picked out red. I think it would look great with my cabinets and everything, but the kitchen is right next to the living room, which has seafoam green walls. You can see the kitchen from the living room, so I don’t want the colors to clash or look too christmasy. What do you think? What are some other kitchen paint ideas? The cabinets are medium brownish with tan counter tops and white fridge.

How Are Golf Balls Are Made? Here’s How!

HOW GOLF BALLS ARE MADE

I’ve often held a Golf ball, and wondered how these were made.  This wondering lead me to a little research, and I found that certain things go into these balls to make them travel farther, straighter, and much more.  After several months of research I decided to write a little about my discoveries.

How golf balls are made can radically determine how they preform.  This story starts out with what’s inside a golf ball.  A solid piece of rubberized plastic, the core  The ball will first start off at what’s called the mixing conveyor.  

A worker mixes a raw batch of ingredients that eventually will become the heart of a golf ball.  The bags used in this making of the golf ball contain crystaline polybutamine, the cores main ingredient. 

Titleist makes 2 distinctive type cores for golf balls.  Hard and soft.  Getting the right amount in the ingredients is very crucial.  The mixture goes into a giant cooker, and a few minutes later it will come out of the cooker.   This is called the hot sheet.Cut and cooled, this hot sheet, now will look a lot like childrens play dough.  This play dough mixture is not ready for the next process where the play dough sheeting is sliced into strips.  A machine called the extruder chops the slices into chips.   They are then cooked in core molding ovens.  This allows the chips to shrink and compress.  The compression provides density, and density provides power. 

Core density on an average golf ball is equal to 88 pounds of steel squeezed into a space just 1.5 inches in diameter.  The core is a power-house of potential energy, the engine that drives the ball.  But, length of drive is only half  the secret of what it takes to keep golfers like me very happy.  If it’s hit straight, it should go straight, and that means achieving a good flight path, and the secret to a good golf balls flight lies in the balls surface.  

The balls external housing is a two (2) piece egg cup that holds the core.  Think of it as a kind of nuclear reactor containment chamber harnessing the cores massive energy.  The cup is made up of a durable plastic called polyurthane.  Chip resistent household paint contains the same ingredients.  After cooking, the golf balls will start looking like golf balls, but they still require one of their most distinctive features, and that’s dimples. 

On a golf ball these dimples are vital, because dimples make spin, and spin makes the ball fly true.  Up to 500 dimples adore each and every golf ball.  So you may ask, “How do dimples get made?”.  Well they go into what is called a Molding Oven where half assembled golf balls are pushed up into hot dimple molds.  Freshly dimpled the balls go to a high speed vaccum to their final destitation.  This finishing processes will make them the choice of champions. 

Arodynamic properties are so important to a balls final preformance that they go through 2 polishing processes, in an effort to further reduce drag.   First they must face the automatic ball buffer.  The final polishing comes when the balls are blasted by high speeds jets of water.

  Finally, after the balls have been branded, robotic sprayers apply a coat of areodynamic paint.  Golf balls almost look like satalites destined for outter space.  Shiny with dimples makes the golf ball what it is today, but they behave like ballistic missles.  The bottled up energy they contain is enormus.  And that’s why golfers spend so much time trying to figure out how to control the golf ball.

Casual golfers don’t give a lot of thought to choosing the right golf ball.  They think of the golf ball as simply a tool that really isn’t important.  After all, you’re just whacking it around the course, right?  Wrong!  Having the right golf ball can gain you distance in your drives, make it easier to pull off finesse shots, and so much more!

Basically, there are three types of balls:  balata, two-piece, or a combination of both.  Golf balls are constructed with three types of purposes in mind as well:  distance, spin, and control.  Choosing an appropriate golf ball really depends on what you are looking for in your golf game.

Are you a low handicap player looking for great spin and control?  If so, choose a balata golf ball.  This is just a softer ball that has a softer cover and allows for more spin.  This is the ball that most professionals choose.  They are also more expensive than other balls.

Perhaps you have a higher handicap and are looking for more distance and durability.  This is where a good two-piece ball will be best.  This golf ball has a harder cover which creates less backspin allowing you to hit it further.

Some golf balls are designed for slower swing speeds with a lightweight construction that catches air.  They are generally marketed for women or seniors, but plenty of men will play these balls because it gets them extra distance.

Believe it or not the weather you are playing in can make a difference in which golf ball you use.  Course conditions can also dictate golf ball choice.  Let’s say the course has been deluged with rain.  In this case, you will need a ball that will travel father and produces less spin.  If you are playing on a rock hard, sun-scorched track, choose something softer that will land soft and spin.

Look at the temperature as well.  Balls for men come in two compressions – 90 and 100.  When you hit the ball, the ball compresses.  Therefore the 90 compression ball will be softer than the 100.  If it’s cold, the ball will not compress as much so you will want to play a 90 compression golf ball.  If it’s hot out, you will want to opt for the 100 compression.

In general, two piece balls are going to give you more distance and they will be more durable so they will last longer.  Solid core golf balls will offer less trajectory and can spin for better accuracy.  Even the dimples on the ball can have an effect on your game.  Smaller dimples lessen trajectory while larger dimples increase it.

Choosing the right golf ball really is important to playing a good game.  There are many, many choices on the market.  Explore which golf ball you may want to use and then try it out.  Experiment and in time, you’ll find exactly the right golf ball for you.
