Things to do in Colorado

Being born and raised in Colorado I wanted to share all the wonderful things to do in that beautiful part of the country. I came up with more than you can imagine so I condensed my list to 5.

1. Red Rocks-The Red Rocks are exactly what it says. They’re Red and they’re Rocks. But not just any rocks. They are huge and slanted beautifully in the mountains near Morrison, Colorado, which is approximately 30 minutes from downtown Denver or 15 miles west of the city. The reason it is so nice is, it serves as an Amphitheater where you can have a nice meal at their full service restaurant and bar, or pick something up from the concession stand. You can also have a wedding, hold a meeting, and the best thing to do at Red Rocks is go to a concert. The acoustics make the sound incredible at the Amphitheater, and make the concert experience much better than that of a regular music hall. The Amphitheater has been compared to the Ancient Greek Theater at Taormina, Sicily, and stands higher than Niagara Falls.

2. Garden of the Gods-Garden of the Gods is a sandstone formation and has an awesome view of Pikes Peak. You can go on a guided nature walk, go horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, and for the lovers, you can get hitched. There wouldn’t be any time for boredom because there is just too much to do. Garden of the Gods is in Colorado Springs approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes or 67 miles south of the Mile High City.

3. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo-The Zoo is also located in Colorado Springs and is breathtaking. When you visit, you’ll see large grizzlies, you can take a mountaineer sky ride, and climb their bouldering wall. They have a historic monument which is 1.4 miles away from the zoo entrance that is dedicated to Will Rogers. The Will Rogers shrine was built by Spencer Penrose between 1934 and 1937, and is a beautiful, must see part of Colorado.

4. Ski Resorts-Colorado is known for the Rocky Mountains. The Rockies contain beautiful ski resorts such as Steamboat Springs, Aspen Highlands, Aspen Mountain, Buttermilk, Crested Butte, Vail, Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, Arapahoe Basin, Echo Mountain, Eldora, Howelsen, Loveland, and Monarch Mountain, just to name a few. There are actually over 20 resorts in the beautiful mountains of Colorado.

5. Sports Fields-Invesco Field at Mile High, (yes the field was rebuilt, and yes it was given a new name, but for us natives we still call it Mile High), Pepsi Center, and Coors Field. In addition to the sports stadiums, Six Flags is located within walking distance of the Pepsi Center.

EDIT: The particular make I’m looking for is with the folding stock similar to the ones seen in Jurassic Park, Terminator, and Aliens.

Fun Events in Aspen, Colorado For The Summer

Summer brings a cornucopia of arts and culture to Aspen, Colorado. From the Aspen Music Festival to the Jazz Aspen/Snowmass Concert series there is no shortage of cultural events to highlight your summer time
activities. While most of the events require that you pay there are plenty of ways that you can enjoy the events and culture that Aspen has to offer for free.

Aspen Music Festival

Held at the Benedict Music Tent, located at the Aspen Meadows Resort, this eight week music festival features over 350 events. The festival includes orchestral concerts, opera, master classes, and kid’s programs. Many of these events are free and you can always sit on the grass area outside the tent for free and listen to the music while picnicking or just relaxing. There are many events all around Aspen as well. One of the best places to find the students of the Music Festival is outside Paradise Bakery in the evening playing your favorite classics for free (tipping is encouraged). The students playing around town during the summer are a “must-see” and add a wonderful ambiance to many of the outdoor dining spots around Aspen.

You can take the RFTA Cross Town shuttle from Ruby Park or free parking is offered at the Benedict Music Tent parking lot, but be aware that the parking fills up quickly and it is best to get there early.

Concessions are available at the Benedict Music Tent and proceeds go to the Aspen Music Festival and School. You are also able to bring your own food and drink and picnic outside the tent on blankets and chairs.

Aspen Food and Wine Classic

A favorite summer event in Aspen is the annual Aspen Food & Wine Magazine Classic. Held in June each year, this Aspen event is considered to be the nation’s premier culinary festival. World-renowned winemakers and celebrity chefs set the stage for this unforgettable Aspen event. Enjoy three days of cooking demonstrations, wine tastings and panel discussions, plus the famed Grand Tasting, all in one beautiful, scenic Aspen setting.

Bluegrass Sundays on Aspen Mountain

A popular event of summer – and free with the purchase of a gondola ticket – this event features top Bluegrass musicians performing outdoors atop Aspen Mountain with an amazing backdrop of the Colorado Rockies. Performances go from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. every Sunday.

Gondola Tickets are for Adults, for children 13 and under, and children 3 and under are free.

Concerts begin on June 20th and go every Sunday through the beginning of September.

Bring your own picnic lunch or dine atop the mountain at the Sundeck.

Be sure to get there early as the chairs set up on the Sundeck fill up fast. You can also bring your own blankets and chairs.

For the more adventurous – try hiking up the Ute Trail to the top of Aspen Mountain. It is a more difficult trail and takes about 2 hours for the more experienced hikers. Once at the top you can take to gondola back down to the base of Aspen Mountain for free.

These events are just a touch of what goes on in Aspen, Colorado during the summer. With so many choices of cultural and local events your days will be filled with fun activities to keep you entertained.
