You Can Turn Ponds Into Remarkable Garden Water Features

Do you have a pond in your yard that leaves you feeling so-so whenever you look at it?  Do you find that it is prone to algae or bad smells or that it just isn’t as attractive as you would like it to be?  If so, you may wish to consider turning it into something more.  Ponds, no matter how big or small, can easily be turned into remarkable garden water features.  With a few simple additions, you can turn your old pond into a beautiful feature that will naturally draw the eye and offer a sense of peace and relaxation.

Turning ponds into garden water features can greatly increase the appeal of your space.  You will find that you can easily install a fountain in a large pond that will help keep water flowing and moving while also providing a spectacular spray.  These fountains can even be outfitted with colored lights to provide an incredible look at night when you want to relax by the fountain or simply provide a nice sight for passersby.  With large ponds, keeping water moving with a large fountain can also help prevent algae and odors while oxygenating the water for fish.

If you have a smaller pond, such as a koi pond, you can still create a remarkable feature in the space. These garden water features can be equipped with small fountains, decorative items that spray and oxygenate water, or even a lovely and calming waterfall.  You will find that simply keeping the water moving can be great for the fish and other inhabitants of your small pond while also keeping bacterial growth to a minimum.  Maintenance of your pond actually becomes much easier once you have installed features that aerate the water while also making them much more pleasurable to look at.

One of the best things about turning ponds into garden water features is that they provide your space with a sense of greater calm and relaxation.  When you want to be able to go into your backyard and read a book or just quietly pass the time without the sounds of moving cars or busy life, a relaxing feature is perfect.  No matter how large or small your pond or yard may be, you can easily turn it into a wonderful feature.  With so many items and fountains to choose from, it can be easy to achieve both the look and the atmosphere you need to create the yard you have always dreamed of.

**Always follow the instructions in your repair manual when doing repair or maintenance work on Outdoor Power Equipment. Manuals can be found at the manufacturers website.** This Craftsman GT5000 Garden Tractor has a hydrostatic transmission with hand control. When the transmission is moved forward, and than put back into neutral it continues to creep forward. Fixing the problem involves adjusting the control arm by loosening a adjusting bolt which is located underneath the right fender and connected to the control arm. To get access to the adjustment bolt, remove the right rear tire. I was able to jack up the rear of the tractor and start it, so I could test the tractor while the rear of the tractor was off the ground. The adjustment requires very small movements until the right position is found. You will know when it is adjusted correctly when the tractor rear wheels do not turn with the transmission is put in neutral from forward and reverse position.

Fair Indigo: ‘Green’ Earth-Friendly Fair Trade Products Made from Renewable, Sustainable Resources

Free Trade, in such parameters as NAFTA and CAFTA is synonymous with global destruction. Think this is hyperbole? Think I’m just a paranoid liberal? Consider this. Most of the first world speaks with a forked tongue. Or at least gives a mixed message. We talk ‘green’ and ‘global’ and ‘environmentally friendly’. Then we talk free trade, EEU, world market. We fear protectionism.

But free trade equals deforestation, laissez faire and world poverty. In order for the first world, aka us, to consume at the pace we do, there must be a third world to support our unprincipled consumerism. Our greed depends upon the blood, sweat and tears of the poor. Or as the great Mother Theresa said, ‘it is a crime that others must suffer and die so that you may live as you wish’. We can’t have what we want at no cost.

The only way to really live green, to help the hungry and suffering, is through fair trade policies. You’ve heard the old maxim; ‘Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.’? I’ll extend that idea. Pay a man fairly for his fish and the whole world eats.

I just discovered a website and fair trade manufacturer that I’m going to promote. Fair Indigo makes a complete line of mens’ womens’ and childrens’ clothing and accessories, handknit with completely sustainable and renewable resources. Many of the products are made from bamboo, which is one of the most sustainable plants on earth. The garments are handmade and durable. Being a natural fiber, bamboo is very breathable. How’s that for truly green living?

Second, the workers are paid a living wage, have reasonable working hours, a month’s paid vacation and five months maternity leave. Is that asking so much? Are these workers selfish? Of course not, but it is pretty uncommon in the third world.

Fair Indigo’s garments and accessories aren’t cheap. But that’s as it should be. If we have to reduce the amount of junk clothing and accessories, that reduces landfills, right? And having to pay more for things helps us understand value better. Furthermore, Fair Indigo has some good sale prices. As my daughter says, ‘it’s an everybody wins thing’. Check out Fair Indigo today.

A short film about how to live GREEN. – Directed by Terence Moore

Question by fallenfire99: Will a red kitchen look gawdy next to a seafoam green living room?
I’m deciding on kitchen paint colors and picked out red. I think it would look great with my cabinets and everything, but the kitchen is right next to the living room, which has seafoam green walls. You can see the kitchen from the living room, so I don’t want the colors to clash or look too christmasy. What do you think? What are some other kitchen paint ideas? The cabinets are medium brownish with tan counter tops and white fridge.

Tips For Updating Kitchen Cabinetry on a Budget

When thinking of a kitchen remodel, the first thing that comes to mind is new kitchen cabinets. However, the cost of replacing kitchen cabinetry can be significant. Updating existing cabinetry, however, is a much more budget friendly option that can yield amazing results. Additionally, there are a variety of ways to go about updating your cabinetry that can fit any budget. Just take a look at these different ways to update your cabinetry that is right for you kitchen and your budget.

Paint or Replace Hardware

Many people don’t realize that something as simple as updating cabinet hardware can inexpensively modernize their cabinetry. Depending on your budget, your can either paint or replace your hardware. Ideally, replacing old hardware with attractive clearance pieces will only set your back -0 depending on the number of cabinets you have. However, if you do not have that kind of money to spend on new hardware, you can always take a little bit of paint and some elbow grease to get the same updated look. Simply clean the hardware, lightly sand it and spray on metallic spray paint designed for metal. Once the paint has dried, you will have new looking hardware for around .

Molding

Is your kitchen cabinetry sporting flat, outdated doors? Then give them a budget conscious upgrade with simple wood molding. Just take the molding of your choice, measure and cut each piece at a 45 degree angle to make a frame. Then attach the wood molding to your cabinet doors with wood glue and stain or paint to match your cabinets. You can even go one step further and attach a similar styled crown molding to the top of your kitchen cabinetry for an expensive looking update on a budget.

Paint

Another easy Do-It-Yourself kitchen cabinet update is paint. You do not have to use the standard white either. If you crave something different, why not try a bold red or cool blue to make your work really stand out. To do this project, remove all of the doors and hardware from the cabinets and give everything a good cleaning. Once the cabinetry is dry, lightly sand the wood with 180 grit sandpaper and apply a light coat of high-quality primer. Then once the primer is dry, apply 2-3 light coats of acrylic paint, letting each coat dry before applying the next. Rehang your cabinet doors and you are done.

Re-stain

Another option if you don’t like the look of painted cabinets is to re-stain your cabinetry. This option is a bit more time consuming process that takes more patients, but the results can be stunning. First the original finish must be removed either with a varnish remover or with a sander. Once you have sanded the wood down to a smooth and uniform surface, you must apply several thin coats of gel stain with a paint brush in the color of your choice. Continue applying stain until you achieve your desired color. Once the stain has dried, apply a lacquer varnish and let set. If this is not a project you care to tackle, you can always hire a professional to do it for you and still save a significant amount of money over replacing your cabinetry.

Reface

If your cabinetry is beyond the help of molding, paint or stain, there is always cabinet refacing. Refacing is simply where the doors and drawer front of the cabinets are replaced with all new ones and the exposed cabinet wood is covered with a matching veneer. This process allows you to keep your current cabinets while still getting a completely new look. Though it is not the most budget friendly option, it could still save you 60% or more on your remodel over getting new cabinets.

So whether you can afford to reface your kitchen cabinets or simply paint the hardware, you can still give your cabinetry an updated look on a budget. So sit down and find out what you can afford to spend and choose one of these great options for your kitchen. No matter what you choose to do, you can be happy that you were able to give your kitchen cabinets a new look without busting your budget.

Ensuring Your Pets? Safety With Your New Electric Pet Fence

Pets can be very rambunctious when playing in the yard, and may often be unaware of boundaries between safety and risk of danger from passing vehicles. If your pet’s safety is a constant concern, it may be time for you to get an electric pet fence installed.

Getting to know your electric pet fence system

Your electric pet fence is designed to create a perimeter boundary and safely contain your pets within a specific physical area, usually in your yard. A highly effective electric fence system is made up of these three essential components:

Transmitter control module

The transmitter control module is the nerve center of your electric pet fence. This component also houses the control system that produces the coded digital radio signal which runs through your electric pet fence. The module also contains the power transformer and a back-up battery-powered unit, should you experience power failure. Your electric pet fence installer should be able to install it in a safe and secure way and should be able to help you be familiar with its operation.

Electric fence wire

Also known as boundary wire, this component is essentially what makes up the physical form of your electric pet fence. The electric wire is laid around the perimeter of your yard to mark the boundary line that you don’t want your pets to cross. Most electric pet fence kits contain a 500-foot long coil of standard 20-gauge electrical wire that can cover the perimeter of up to 1/3 of an acre. If you have a bigger yard or area, you can buy additional wire in most hardware or electrical supply stores in the Columbus area. You can discuss how best to install the boundary wires with your installer, either burying it or using staples and/or zip ties.

Pet receiver collar

The pet receiver collar has a digital radio signal receiver programmed to activate a warning sound when your dog reaches a pre-set distance near the boundary wire. If your dog is stubborn and continues to approach the edge, he or she will receive a minor shock designed to surprise him or her. For your pet’s safety, it’s important to have a trained installer to configure the pet receiver collar properly and set the shock strength that induces only surprise and discomfort, but not cause severe pain and physical shock. As a rule of thumb, only a shock level that’s enough to get your pet’s attention into leaving the boundary wire area is used. It’s wise to choose an electric pet fence system that allows for variable shock levels. This is especially useful when you keep pets of varying sizes. If you have large breeds, an interesting feature that you want to ask your installer is a pet receiver collar with a vibration feature. It’s also important to remember that the pet receiver collar does not replace your pet’s regular collar and must not be used as such.

Size counts when choosing the right electrical pet fence system

When choosing an electric pet fence system, you need to get one that is a good fit for your pet (or pets) and your yard. In this case, size counts. There many different electric pet fence systems that answer specific yard and pet needs, so ask your electric pet fence installer which system would be appropriate for you.

Keeping your pets safe is the bottom line

When you install an electric pet fence, you’re ensuring the safety of your pets, and your peace of mind. A highly effective electric pet fence will give your pets free rein all over your yard, while affirming his or her boundaries in a friendly but firm way.

New Technologies

Stay on top of new and improved technologies in the electric pet fence industry. Wireless Systems, Designer Collars and improved batteries are just some of the new equipment that might be available to you. Check with your local Electric Pet Fence dealer to discuss your options and see what’s right for you.

It’s time to build your house plan – right now!

I attended an online seminar (“Stimulus and the Housing Market”) yesterday put on by Professional Builder Publications. Here are a few interesting tidbits.

First time home buyers can still get an ,000.00 tax credit if you purchase the home by December 1 of 2009. There is speculation that this credit may be extended or even expanded to non-first time buyers. Let’s hope.
For those thinking of remodeling tax credits are available for window and door replacements and / or other energy improving strategies. You can get more information on this at www.energystar.gov/taxcredits
The Home Affordability Index is at a record high. This means that construction costs are low and financing is still relatively cheap. If you are in a position to build or buy, this is truly the time to do it.
Consumer confidence is just beginning to improve.
Single Family housing is expected to begin modest recovery soon. Multi-Family is expected to lag for a while.
Existing home inventory is still high, but it is going down. This is a good sign.
U.S. construction spending is expected to start increasing by end of 09′ or early 10′.

So what is the point? Now is really a good time to buy, build or remodel. Low consumer confidence and low demand are keeping construction costs down while financing costs are still relatively low. This is a good combination if you are in a position to take action. Once recovery starts to happen you know where construction costs are going to go.

Some Basic Facts about Fishing Gear

In fishing, it is very important to an angler’s success that he starts with the proper equipment. He may purchase or own the finest equipment in the world, but when it is assembled and put into use, it may prove to be a very decided handicap.

To guard against this, it is important that the individual items of tackle be properly balanced one with the other. Unbalanced equipment has been responsible for more difficulties and failures of beginners than any other single factor.

Fishing Rod

To fish with a good rod is to really enjoy fishing. It is much easier to learn with a good rod than with one of an inferior quality. This is no commercial plug to encourage the sale of expensive rods, but just a word of warning to prevent any possible or unnecessary discouragement because of using a rod that would be decided handicap to a competent caster.

Fishing Lines

This item of fishing gear must be selected with some careful considerations if anglers are expecting to enjoy fishing or casting.

This is because the size and weight of fishing lines made by various manufacturers are not entirely uniform, that is, the diameter of the line by one manufacturer may be slightly larger or smaller than a line by another manufacturer even though both bear the same size marking.

The Leader

The leader is also a very important item, and unless it is selected with care and consideration in comparison with the size of the line, the caster will have trouble in making it extend straight out from the line when casting.

The chief function of the leader is to serve as an invisible connection between the line and the lure.

Fishing Flies or Lures

The flies may range in size, from the tiniest used, which might be number 18 or 20, up to flies tied on number-2 hooks or larger. The heavier flies or lures create; more wind is needed. It also requires the use of heavier equipment or more power on the part of the caster during the back cast and forward cast.

Reels

The reel may be automatic or single action, but in any event, it should be larger enough to hold the usual 30 yards of fishing line without crowding it on the reel spool.

The reel should weigh from 1 ¼ to 1 ½ as much as the bare rod. The reel itself is of no specific use in casting or fishing except as a storage place for the line.

Consequently, the entire equipment should always be in good condition. Other wise, achieving success in fishing is impossible.

Essential Materials For a Budget Kitchen Makeover

Kitchen makeovers can quickly be a budget buster when you are working with materials like granite, real wood and stainless steel. However,if you plan your kitchen remodel around budget friendly materials, you can get a new look for much less. There are five materials in particular that are absolutely essential when you are doing a budget kitchen makeover. Make sure to incorporate these into your new design to help keep your budget in check.

Paint

One of the most diverse materials on a budget is by far paint. Paint can transform old cabinets, hardware, appliances and even countertops into beautiful assets for your kitchen. With today’s improved paints, it is possible to transform almost anything with paint as long as you do the proper preparation. So before you decide to spend money completely replacing something in your kitchen, see if it is possible to give it a new look with a little bit of paint. It is almost always the less expensive option.

Laminate

Over the years, laminate has received a bad reputation that it is quickly recovering from. Laminate is just as durable and reasonably priced as it has ever been, but it now looks great as well. Install new laminate counters instead of granite or laminate wood flooring instead of real wood. You will save yourself a fortune while still getting an attractive new look.

Peel and Stick Stainless Steel

Do you want the look of stainless steel appliance or a stainless steel backsplash but can’t spend thousands of dollars to get it? Pick up some peel and stick stainless steel film. This material looks and feels like the real thing but only costs around per roll. The only downside is that you will need patients and even some help to apply it smoothly. However, if you are willing to do a little work, this material can give you an expensive look on a tiny budget.

Vinyl Tiles

Want an easy and inexpensive floor or backsplash? Vinyl tiles can be just what you need. The peel and stick variety are cheap, easy for anyone to install and now look better than ever. If you are feeling even more adventurous, you can always pick up the groutable vinyl tiles for a more realistic look that is still less than real tiles.

Hardware and Lighting

New hardware and lighting purchased on clearance are another great material for a budget kitchen remodel. Old lighting and cabinet hardware can date a kitchen quickly. Since it would likely only cost a few hundred dollars to replace these items if you shop smart, it only makes since to go ahead and replace them.

So as you are planning your beautiful new kitchen, keep these budget friendly materials in mind. With a little paint, laminate, vinyl and hardware, you can create the look you have always wanted for a fraction of the cost. It just takes some planning, hard work and some of these essential budget kitchen makeover materials.

Question by dorigen: My kitchen remodel included “appliance installation” does that include moving the appliances into the house?
I hired a kitchen design company to do a total gut and remodel of my kitchen. The contract says that appliance installation is included. The appliance company dropped off the appliances in my garage. My kitchen contractor is claiming that only the “installation” of the appliances is included, not the physical movement of the appliances from outside the house to inside. Is this typical? I feel like I’m getting ripped off because I might have to spend extra money to get a mover.

Best answer:

Answer by eskie lover
When we specify installation, we mean that we physically move them from where they were delivered to where they will be installed. It often happens that the appliances are delivered before other work that needs to be performed before the appliance is installed, isn’t. And, we don’t want the appliances cluttering up the area until that work is completed, so many clients have them delivered into the garage until my electrician or plumber says the appliance is ready to be installed and all other prep work is completed.

Personally, I would be a little insistent with the design company that they move the appliances from the garage to the kitchen. Especially, if there is other work to be completely prior to their installation. I would threaten to contact the Better Business Bureau and the State Contractor’s Licensing Board to complain. Moreover, this is a very poor example of customer service and I gather they aren’t expecting you to be a happy satisfied customer who will act as a referral in the future!
