NASCAR: Humble Beginnings To Marketing Gold Mine

On-car marketing has made NASCAR racing a big business. This effective form of advertising has elevated stock car racing from its humble beginnings to a multi-million dollar industry and an American tradition.

NASCAR had humble beginnings that grew from illegal over the road racing.  These early events were organized as friendly competitons amongst moonshine runners for the honor of boasting the fastest car around.

These fledgling events pulled out all the stops and the only rules were pretty much this: There were no rules.  Junior Johnson is pictured above with his fabuluously restored legendary bootleg runner called the Midnight Moon.

Junior originally ran moonshine during the prohibition but after it was appealed,he went on to become the first NASCAR driver icon.

Once it became obvious that this new sport began attracting crowds at local racetracks, many drivers began to paint advertisements on their cars in order to offset the cost of building and maintaing their cars.  Unlike today, drivers were lucky to receive a trophy and a small amount of cash for winning a race.

The crash at Daytona in 1960 is certainly the biggest in history and occurred on one of the new super tracks that had been completed earlier that year.  Thirty seven cars were involved in the massive wreck.  Whether it was caused by flaws in the design of the track of human error will never be known.

Contemporary cars are usually sponsored by automobile industry related corporations such as NAPA.  By doing so, the cost of building, maintaining and transporting the cars, as well as compensating their drivers, which can also be written of as a business expense.  Basically, the concept is a win-win situation making race events a win-win situation for sponsors.

Today, NASCAR events are pure marketing heaven. Car related industries are making a fortune by crashing in on on-car marketing because they benefit from a captive audience that meets their demographic criteria.  What makes this marketing method so effective is that not only does the endorser benefit but the drivers benefit as well.

Every driver has a huge number of fans. How well a driver races each season has a great deal to do with how interested advertisers are in seeing them endorse their products. What is interesting is that many NASCAR drivers see more income from endorsements than from the races themselves. They are so closely associated with these endorsements that we often refer to a car by their main endorser. One example is the Michael Waltrip, who drives the NAPA car.

With over million in marketing sales being seen per year due to NASCAR sporting events, it is a certainty that the four P’s (product, pricing, place and promotion) are being utilized better in the NASCAR arena making it one of the most lucrative advertising venues today.

10. FlatOut 2

FlatOut 2 is a racing video game developed by Bugbear Entertainment and published by Empire Interactive and Vivendi Universal Games. It is the sequel to the 2004-2005 release FlatOut. This game is themed more on the street racing/import tuner scene than its predecessor. Another notable change is the tire grip; players can now take more control of their car, worrying less about skidding in tight turns. The game has three car classes: derby, race and street. The ragdoll physics from the sequel have been greatly updated. During the race, the driver may be thrown out of the car if slammed into a wall at a high speed.

In the numerous Stunt minigames the goal is to shoot yourself out of the car and complete objectives like knocking down a set of bowling pins, hitting the designated spots on a dartboard, score a field goal or fly through flaming hoops. Players must use ‘aerobatics’ to control the driver in-flight, but overusing it will increase drag, which will slow the driver down and possibly prevent him/her from reaching the designated target. If the driver falls short of the target, players can use the “nudge”. This gives the driver a small upward boost and slightly reduces drag. In the Stone Skipping Stunt minigame, the players must use nudge just as the driver hits the surface of the water to skip the most efficiently and reach the furthest. There are unfortunately many glitches with this mode i.e. getting stuck in objects. -Wikipedia.org

9. NASCAR 2006: Total Team Control

NASCAR 06: Total Team Control is the ninth installment of the EA Sports’ NASCAR video game series. It was developed by EA Tiburon and released on August 30, 2005 for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. The NTSC game cover features Hendrick Motorsports teammates Jeff Gordon, driver of the #24 DuPont Automotive Finishes Chevy Monte Carlo and Jimmie Johnson, driver of the #48 Lowe’s Home Improvement Chevy Monte Carlo. The PAL region game cover features Kurt Busch in the #97 Irwin Industrial Tools Ford Taurus.

NASCAR 06 follows the series’ recent tradition of being subtitled with the major new feature of that edition. Total Team Control derives from the new teammate features: one can switch control from their driver to another car on their team during a race, and can command the teammate to follow, block or work with the player. It also implements Logitech USB audio technology, allowing the player to order their crew chief with a headset or microphone. The rest of the game retains the modes and features brought into the series by NASCAR 2005: Chase for the Cup, making NASCAR 06 very similar to its predecessor. -Wikipedia.org

8. MX vs. ATV Unleashed

MX vs. ATV Unleashed is a racing simulation console video game for Xbox, PlayStation 2 and PC. It was developed by Rainbow Studios and published by THQ. MX vs. ATV Unleashed has a thriving community, especially the PC version. There are hundreds of custom tracks and skins available at mcmfactory. -Wikipedia.org

7. RalliSport Challenge 2

Rallisport Challenge 2 is the sequel to the platinum hit Rallisport Challenge. This game contains new features such as a cockpit cameras and ability to change car at the last moment. However, stats like total horsepower and number of gears have been eliminated from the car selection screen. Cars are split up into 5 categories with 2 subcategories each plus “Classic” cars. There are 4 paint schemes on each car and drivers must drive 31, 87, and 149 miles before unlocking a new one. By winning all championships in the career mode, all paint schemes for all cars are unlocked. -Wikipedia.org

6. FlatOut

FlatOut (a.k.a. FO or FO1) is a racing video game developed by Finnish Bugbear Entertainment and published by Empire Interactive and Vivendi Universal Games in 2004 and 2005. Gameplay in Flatout places emphasis on demolition derby-style races, and features a sophisticated physics engine. 16 different cars are included, each with 5 different skins for them. Modes in FlatOut include standard lap races, in either open environments or stadium laps, and demolition derby deathmatches, in which the driver of the sole-surviving vehicle declared the winner; both modes pit players against 7 computer-controlled opponents.

The game also includes special events which require the player to toss the driver off of his/her vehicle and meet certain requirements. In career mode, pick up your future top racer from the junkyard. Winnings come in the form of cash, which allows players to purchase vehicle upgrades and new vehicles. FlatOut is noted for its extensive use of physics in vehicle damage and collisions; dents on vehicles may vary based on the type of accident, object and angle of impact (falling objects, for example, will damage mostly the upper areas of a car), while many roadside items react better to collisions from other vehicles. -Wikipedia.org

5. Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition

Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition is a racing game, developed by Rockstar San Diego and published by Rockstar Games, and is the third game in the Midnight Club series. Like previous installments in the series, the game is an arcade-style racer and focuses on wild, high-speed racing, rather than realistic physics and driving characteristics. The name derived from a partnership between Rockstar and DUB Magazine, which features heavily in the game in the form of DUB-sponsored races and DUB-customized vehicles as prizes.

Players race through open world recreations of San Diego, Atlanta, and Detroit listening to 103 licensed music tracks that include hip-hop, rock, and more. The game features a number of graphical enhancements over previous installments, such as “speed smear”, enhanced lighting effects, and the inclusion of flying road debris and particles coming into view after the player crashes into certain objects, or travels across particular stretches of road. There is also the ability to customize a player’s vehicle. Other than modifying the external looks, the car’s/truck’s performance can also be improved, except for those in the ‘A’ Class of the game. However, Class A motorbikes’ performance can be improved. -Wikipedia.org

4. Need for Speed Underground 2

Need for Speed: Underground 2 (NFSU2) is a cross-platform racing video game published and developed by Electronic Arts. Released in 2004, it is the direct sequel to Need for Speed: Underground, and is part of the Need for Speed series, available on GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance and Windows. It was developed by EA Black Box. Like its predecessor, it was also commercially successful, and sold nine million copies worldwide.

The game is based around tuning cars for street races, resuming the Need for Speed: Underground storyline. Need for Speed: Underground 2 provides several new features, such as a broader customization, new methods of selecting races, the “explore” mode (just driving around freely, like the Midnight Club series, in a large city known as “Bayview”). Underground 2 also introduces several SUVs, which could be customized as extensively as other Underground 2 vehicles and used to race against other SUV racers. Brooke Burke is the voice of Rachel Teller, the person who guides the player through the story. -Wikipedia.org

It is the second title in the Project Gotham Racing series. As in PGR, the route to advancement in PGR2 differs from most racing games. Advancement in PGR2 required a combination of driving fast enough to meet the challenge set, and scoring enough Kudos points to advance.

Kudos points are gained through the player’s driving skills, such as power sliding around a corner at speed, or overtaking other drivers in the race. Kudos points are used to unlock new cars. The Kudos system, challenges set, available cars and the tracks around which players race were expanded greatly from the original. -Wikipedia.org

1. Burnout 3: Takedown

Burnout 3: Takedown is the third game in the Burnout series of video games. The game was then picked up by Electronic Arts, the game was then further delayed as changes were made to the game. It is also the only game in the series that received a T rating by the ESRB, making it the last game in the series to be released before the E10+ rating debuted on March 2, 2005. EA Games shut down all network services on April 15, 2010. It is the longest Burnout game to ever have 6th gen console online support. -Wikipedia.org

Picking Grapes and Rolling Trays: Life as a migrant in Central California #1 – Tools of the trade – An empty milk gallon

Picking Grapes and Rolling Trays

Tools of the Trade:

*hooked knife – el cuchillo
*small tub – la bandeja
*handerkerchief – el pañuelo
*paper trays – el papel
*empty milk gallon – el galón
*lots of burritos made fresh this morning – “el lonche”
*a strong back – una espalda fuerte
*strong arms – brazos fuertes
*willingness to get dirty and remain dirty – no te molesta ensuciarte y permanecer cubierto de polvo
*ability to breath dust and afits all day – la habilidad de respirar polvo y bichos todo el día
*a herculean spirit – un espíritu hercúleo
*indestructible knees – rodillas indestruibles

Agua

You might be wondering why an empty milk gallon is on the list. Well, when you clean it out it makes the perfect watering jug. Fill it with cold water and leave it amongst the vines so that it remains cool and you have drinkable water nearby all the time.

When my brothers and I were young the watering jug became a way out; it was the way that we would take a short break, and depending on our conscious maybe a longer break, from work that melted your knees and broke your back. You see, in the middle of August and at the beginning of September the temperature in the Central San Joaquin Valley of California can reach 110 Fahrenheit (roughly 44/45 Celsius) and stay that way for most of the day. This is the time of year that the picking of grapes occurs. In order to dry grapes naturally, you need weather conditions that can not only make raisins out of grapes but of men as well.

Working in these conditions survival depends on you staying hydrated; we were literally drinking gallons of water every day. When the gallon of water was empty my mother would yell from down the row, “Agua, ¿Quién va por el agua?” Usually the closest of us three boys would go and get the water, the other two accepted it and waited for the next time that the milk gallon would be empty. We continued to pick grapes while the fortunate brother went to refill the empty gallon with water. If we were lucky and our brother felt like working that day then we would have water within minutes. If however, the brother that went for water decided to talk to the Ramirez family picking in the next row over, or have a conversation with the son of the farmer that owned the vineyards, or do any of any numbers of things to extend the time that he was out of the row and not picking grapes then this 10 minute task would take a while.

A Vineyard could be several acres and composed of rows upon rows upon rows of vines.

We looked down the ½ mile long vineyard row to see if our brother was on his way back with the water. This did not speed my brother up but instead made time go by even slower.

My older brother got back and calmly and coolly said,

–“ Ama, no había water so tuve que esperar until el patrón brought more.

== “Pues ya es hora de comer. Ve y trae el lonche.”

**Lucky bastard!

Question by HUSSAIN H: What would be the overall miles per gallon the car would report for the total driving done?
The wife of an engineering professor filled up her car’s gas tank, reset the fuel economy calculator to zero, and then drove the hybrid electric car 82 miles. During her trips, she obtained 37.2 miles per gallon performance out of the car. The professor drove the car an additional 8 miles, averaging 51 miles per gallon during his trips. What would be the overall miles per gallon their car would report for the total driving done since they reset the fuel economy calculator?

Best answer:

Answer by Steve A
They went 82 + 8 miles = 90 miles
They used 82/37.2 + 8/51 gallons = 2.361 gallons

90 miles / 2.361 gallons = 38.1 mpg

Ferrari Developing Mind-Reading Car?

Stepping into a Ferrari’s sleek cockpit is enough to set anyone’s pulse racing. But what if that was a bad thing? Italy’s most illustrious motoring marque is working on an in-car system that monitors a driver’s mental state behind the wheel, according to a British car magazine. Effectively, future mind-blowing Ferraris may also read a driver’s mind.it can be possilble easily.

The idea behind the device is thaat Ferrari drivers may get just a little excited — go figure — and this heightened state could lead them to drive more dangerously. The way it works is that a series of in-cabin sensors will monitor a driver’s heart rate, blood pressure, facial reactions and brain activity. The sensors will act to increase safety by detecting not only a state of excitement but also by monitoring a driver’s alertness, or indeed tiredness, by way of their blink rate. The car’s performance is then automatically adjusted through the car’s stability control systems.

Some car manufacturers like Volvo already include so-called heartbeat sensors in their cars, though these are to detect if an intruder is hiding in the back seat. Stability and traction control systems in most new performance cars (and increasingly mid-range vehicles) frequently override driver reactions if they are deemed to be unsafe. GM and Ford recently unveiled their plans for cars that adjust automatically to factors beyond a driver’s control including road and traffic conditions.

According to Autocar, Ferrari has filed a series of global patent applications that state: “Drivers tend to miscalculate — in particular, overestimate — their driving skill and, more importantly, their psychophysical condition, with the result that driver-selected dynamic vehicle performance simply reflects the driver’s wish, as opposed to the driver’s actual psychophysical condition and proficiency.”

It continues: “The biometric sensors may comprise a piezoelectric measuring device for measuring the driver’s respiration, a device for measuring the driver’s blood pressure and heart rate, a television camera for monitoring the driver’s eyes (blink rate) to determine the driver’s alertness, a device for monitoring the electric activity of the driver’s brain, a device for recording the driver’s surface temperature and a device for recording the conductivity of the driver’s skin (to determine the degree of perspiration).”

While stopping short of suggesting that the car ultimately will drive itself, Ferrari’s ingenuity takes the concept of driver and car connectivity to a new level. Although Ferrari says the technology will be “non-invasive,” drivers presumably will be able to monitor their own performance by feeling out the car’s responsiveness. Effectively, the car’s performance will be a measure of their own. Spooky, huh?

Questions remain in terms of legal implications should a car that’s had its performance electronically downshifted be involved in an accident. There’s no word yet on whether the cars would include a sensor to detect driver alcohol intake. And of course, we’d also ask what’s the point of owning a Ferrari whose performance could change, quite literally, in the blink of an eye, without the driver being able to control it, save pulling over for a quick rest.

Paul Green, a Driver Interaction research professor at the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute, told AOL Autos that the challenge carmakers face is to make a monitoring system that is both reliable and inexpensive. He predicts such systems will one day be commonplace on trucks for long-distance driving but wonders if it’s something a typical Ferrari buyer would want in their car.

“If I buy a Ferrari I want to have fun. Why would I want something that affects its performance?” he said.

Alongside monitoring fatigue, he said that it could be useful in monitoring first-time buyers’ reactions or to forensically measure driver reactions in the moments before a road-rage incident or high-speed crash.

“To measure heartbeat is simple, people do it in laboratory studies, but monitoring when people start to close their eyes could be a better indicator of fatigue. The one that’s most promising is the camera that looks at the face and eyes. It can not only detect drowsiness but also detect the driver being distracted,” he said.

Earlier this month GM gave an early peek at its plans for a car and driver interaction at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. By collecting road and traffic data and then aggregating the data from many cars, as displayed on its EN-V concept, GM believes it can build an accurate picture of a driving environment and its cars can react accordingly. Ford engineers recently told AOL Autos of the importance of a car interacting with the “ecosphere” around it, describing it as a key part of its strategy going forward.

No matter how this all plays out, Ferrari’s research is a sign that drivers in future will be much more connected to a car and its environment than merely parking their behinds in the driver’s seat.Driving by the seat of your pants may become a thing of the past.

Question by bamakodaker: Who was the race car driver killed when the front of his stock car was ripped off?
I keep “seeing” this memory of a race on TV from the 80′s or 70′s. Not sure if it was ABC Sports. The stock cars were racing there was a wreck where the front of the race car was torn off. The passenger compartment was open, you could see the driver. The car was spinning and was backwards, the driver looking at the field coming up on him, when another car slammed into him. What race was that? Who was the driver killed and who was the driver that slammed into him?

EFI PERFORMANCE – Dyno Tuning Brisbane.

Q. EFI PERFORMANCE has a lot of fast cars on the track. How do you achieve this?

A. What we found is it’s very, very easy to make power using dyno tuning.

Controlling that power to generate good times is 99% of the battle. In a lot of our drag cars we will use boost control over wheel speed. Also boost control over transbrake, so, on the example that we do which is a 1JZ that we tune, we actually limit boost to ten pound on the transbrake. Then once the transbrake is released, we control the boost from 10 pound to 24 pound, from zero kilometers an hour to 60 kilometers an hour. And this gives us our best sixty foot on radial tires that we can get.

We found that if we dial in a little too much boost then we wheel spin. If we pull too much boost out, we just simply don’t have the power to get the car going off the line.

Another thing we use is nitrous control. We use nitrous control to get the turbo on to boost so when the customers transbrake in full throttle, revs will come up when the 500 sees one pound of boost, it’ll actually give a quick spray of nitrous just to bring it on to boost. Leaving the transbrake on ten pound, trim the boost up to twenty-four pound at 60 kilometers an hour. And then at 80 kph we actually bring nitrous back in to try and propel the car as quickly as we can down the drag strip.

We also use similar sort of setups for launch control or I should say, two step for a manual car. So, we can have clutch in, full throttle at 0k an hour and setup a secondary rev limit that is suited for that car. So, when the driver drops the clutch, the car just launches directly without wheel spin and without bogging down.

Best answer:

Answer by Hotrod021075
I have not driven the f430 but i have exp. in similar models. I would have to say the Lotus Exige s240. Car 1; ZR1-NIce engine great exceleration and very fast but takes corners poorly.
Car 2;F430-Nice all around except the interior. I have not driven this car yet but i have seen pictures and i have an older model and the interior is a mess.
Car 3: Lotus Exige-GREAT ALL AROUND The sound is very nice and the acceleration is great. The thing that seperates this car from others handling. I dont know if you are going to take this car on the track but if you do this will kill. If you are just driving around then the Ferrari. IF you are just STUCK on American muscle then ZR1

Why the Nascar Chase for the Cup is Ruining Nascar

4130966756 53b18fcbbc m Why the Nascar Chase for the Cup is Ruining Nascar
by Ungaio

I was once a proud Nascar fan. Before the Nascar chase for the cup was instituted in 2004 I would rush home from church on Sunday evenings to settle on the couch with my pizza, popcorn and drinks to cheer my favorite driver to victory. I loved the sport and loved the excitement it brought both on TV and in person.

My Sunday afternoons now consist of settling on my couch flipping through the channels and watching either a baseball game or flipping the channels back and forth between a race or some other sporting event. If it is fall and the NFL is on I will only flip the channel to the Nascar race to see who is winning or how my favorite driver is doing. I must admit that I miss Nascar, but I am now an apathetic Nascar fan. So what is wrong with this once proud sport? Speculation is rampant, and the facts are hard to ignore. According to the Sporting News there has been a double digit drop in the ratings since 2007. Scrott Graf of NPR reports that Nascar is continually showing signs of losing fans. As an outsider it is easy to see that the sponsors Nascar depends on have slowly walked away from the sport. Brands such as Kodak, Dodge, and others used to be displayed proudly on the side of these race cars. So what is wrong with the sport?

In order to find what is wrong with Nascar I think you have to start at the beginning. From its infancy Nascar was a proud Southern sport. Most if not all of the races were held south of the Mason Dixon Line and east of the Mississippi. Race tracks such as Rockingham Motor Speedway and North Wilkesboro Speedway used to fill the Nascar schedule. As Nascar grew so did it’s borders. Nascar began expanding westward to places like California, Las Vegas, and Dallas. This expansion took away from the sports base and added great new markets, but somewhere along the lines the Nascar powers got greedy. The increased audience from adding new markets created a hunger for created expansion. Nascar turned to gimmicks to promote its sport.

The first gimmick Nascar ran to was its attempt at creating a play off system. In 2004 Nascar began the season for the first time in its history knowing that the first 26 races were the regular season. Drivers who once could dominate the sport by running consistently were now being forced into a different strategy. Only drivers who were in the top 10 in points would be eligible for the points championship. I believe this is where the watering down of the sport began. Mediocre drivers could finish in the top 10 in points after 26 races and still be eligible to win the Cup Championship. Drivers who previously would have never won a championship were now on the front lines battling away. To some this may seem like a good idea, but what this system does is reward mediocrity. Nascar fell into the trap that the rest of our country is falling into that there should never be a dominant team, or a dominant driver. By allowing mediocre drivers to compete for a championship Nascar crowned its first mediocre champion in 2004.

The second gimmick Nascar fell victim to was the attempt at leveling the playing field. Pushing the limits of rules has always been an accepted part of racing. Nascar has begun cracking down on what was once known as racing ingenuity and has begun punishing those who seek to gain an advantage. The problem with this is that if you are a racer and you aren’t trying to gain an advantage then you really are not racing. The constant push to increase horsepower and fuel mileage is and should be a part of the sport. By punishing ingenuity Nascar has once again started to reward mediocrity. No where is this more seen than in Nascars new car. Once billed as the Car of Tomorrow, Nascar did something noble in trying to make their cars more safe. In the process of making the cars more safe they also made every car alike. One would be hard pressed to distinguish a Ford from a Chevrolet out on the track. This has ruined the once proud saying of winning on Sunday sells cars on Monday. It has had the affect of killing brand loyalty on the track and in the showroom. Could this also be why American car companies have seen a drastic decline in sales? One can only speculate.

Nascar needs to wake up and remember what made them America’s fastest growing sport. Dynasties make for popular sports. Does anyone really think that Major League Baseball would be where it is today had it not been for the New York Yankees and the many championships they have won? Would the NFL be the most popular sport in the US without the Steelers, Cowboys, and Patriots? Nascar…it is time you see that you have marginalized the very fans that got you to where you are. We told you not to institute the Nascar chase for the Cup. You still are trying to convince us that its a good thing. How long will you continue to allow your ratings to plummet before you see what the real problem is? Please don’t go looking for another cheap gimmick such as your double wide restarts. Please go back to rewarding ingenuity and consistency. Please go back to allowing the great drivers to be year long dynasties. I really do want to watch your sport again…but until you make some changes I promise I will continue to be disinterested in the Nascar Chase for the Cup.
